TONO

What is TONO?

TONO is an independent organisation established in 1928 by Norwegian composers, lyricists and publishers. TONO is organised as a co-operative society which manages its members' performance and recording rights to music based on individual, exclusive rights management contracts.

The fact that rights management is exclusive means that members themselves are not entitled to give their consent for their music to be used in public once such a contract is signed.

Who does TONO represent?

TONO represents its members based on authorisation granted to TONO under the rights management contract the organisation has with each individual member. TONO belongs to CISAC and has signed reciprocal representation agreements with sister companies in almost 100 countries, meaning it actually manages the "global repertoire" of music in Norway.

On the other hand, under the reciprocal agreements, rights to Norwegian musical works shall generally be cleared in the country of use. In countries in which such agreements or organisations do not exist, TONO can clear the rights to use Norwegian music.

TONO's responsibilities are to:

  • enter into individual agreements with music users in Norway for the performance and recording of protected musical works;
  • enter into agreements signed centrally with representative organisations in the Norwegian music industry and in business and industry, which form the basis for individual users' right to perform music in public;
  • institute legal measures where TONO becomes aware that its members' work have been used illegally;
  • and keep members informed about copyright and other conditions that have a bearing on their legal status as creative artists.
