What is Norwaco?

Norwaco is an independent rights management organisation that administers copyright in sound and image media such as film, radio and television. The organisation enters into agreements for the extended use of the programme content in these media, and collects and distributes the agreed remuneration.

Who does Norwaco represent?

Established in 1983, Norwaco consists of 33 member organisations that organise more than 35 000 authors, performing artists, photographers and producers. The organisation acts by virtue of authorisations from its members, but also enters into agreements that have a binding effect on non-organised and foreign rightsholders, pursuant to special statutory provisions. Norwaco has been approved by the Ministry of Cultural Affairs to engage in these activities.

What does Norwaco offer?

Norwaco offers agreements regarding the right to use protected material that involves sound and moving pictures. Such agreements guarantee users that all copyright matters related to their activities are in order. This provides financial security as it eliminates subsequent, unexpected claims.

Norwaco currently manages:

  • Agreements regarding the right to re-transmit radio and television channels in cable networks, etc.;
  • Agreements regarding the right to record radio and television programmes, e.g. for educational or information purposes;
  • The allocation of remuneration for the satellite and video distribution of Norwegian feature films.

The agreements in these areas of use are standard ones with trade organisations which individual users may sign. The agreed remuneration is paid to Norwaco, which ensures the correct distribution among the rightsholders. Many will find agreements here that suit their needs. New areas of agreement may be developed as required.
