What is FONO?

FONO - The Association of Norwegian Record Companies is a special-interest organisation for Norwegian record companies. The association was established in 1980 and the vast majority of Norwegian record companies are members. FONO has about 100 members.

Who does FONO represent?

FONO represents Norwegian record-producers who have, pursuant to the association's Articles of Association and other authorisations, transferred rights to the central association. FONO represents members' interests in rights management organisations such as Gramo, Norwaco, the Norwegian Cassette Levy Fund, the State purchasing scheme for Norwegian phonograms, etc. The association is also represented in the Forum for Norwegian Music, the Record Industry's Ethical Council and the Spellemann Committee. FONO has established a special agreement for its members relating to the superimposition of phonograms in television productions made by NRK and TV2.

FONO's responsibilities

  • Strive to benefit Norwegian phonogram production and promote Norwegian phonograms as a cultural medium;
  • Promote members' interests in respect of other organisations, associations and government authorities;
  • Enter into collective agreements with nation-wide TV channels regarding superimposition and the fixing of sound involving protected works of music in television productions;
  • Keep members informed about copyright and other matters of significance for their legal position as phonogram publishers;
  • Help enhance the visibility of Norwegian music in Norway and abroad;
  • Take initiatives to counteract the illegal use of members' repertoire.
